Skin Products and Fertility

The skin is the largest organ of the body and acts as an interface with the surrounding environment. Because it interacts with the environment, it plays a very important role in protecting (the body) against pathogens. Skin is a semi-permeable structure and serves as a physical and protective barrier. Various factors influence its permeability such as age, site, and thickness. The skin of an infant or child is more permeable than that of adults. The mechanism of absorption through the skin is complicated and factors that influence absorption through the skin are amount of chemical applied, duration of contact, and whether the skin is broken (rash.)

The mass production of food, water, skin creams, shampoos, gels, bottles, containers, etc, has resulted in people being indirectly and directly exposed to a whole host of chemicals which are toxic to fertility. Toxic chemicals are placed in and on our bodies on a daily basis and this has a long term impact on the quality of eggs and sperm. Unfortunately, the regulatory agencies in the United States have been mainly concerned with carcinogenic potential and have largely ignored the impact of pesticides, phytoestrogens, and perfluorinated chemicals on embryo quality and subsequent fertility.

Alarmingly, many studies have been performed which demonstrate the negative impact of certain chemical exposures on fertility, yet nothing has been done to regulate the chronic exposure and the continuing decline of the fertile population. For instance, Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an ingredient found in hard, glasslike polycarbonate plastic that's used to make bottles for babies and sports drinks. It's also used in the plastic resin that lines tin cans. In addition, it can be found in plastic food containers, CDs, dental sealants and toys. The Environmental Working Group has recently expressed some concern that this chemical may be harmful in humans but since no human studies have been completed, there has been no action to stop the use of this chemical in products that are used on a daily basis. Fortunately, this chemical does not last in the bloodstream for a long time after initial exposure, therefore, limiting the amount of chronic exposure by avoiding plastic containers, and canned items.

It is true that there is much well documented information on the effects of various chemicals and substances on our health and what are potential carcinogens to stay away from, however, with the onset of less synthetic products and more all natural products, little has been said about the natural impact of these ingredients on fertility. Males have also seen a steady decline in the amount and motility of sperm since the 1950’s, and the incidence of both prostate and testicular cancer have risen. We’re not just seeing this phenomenon in humans. The males of many species of birds, mammals, and amphibians are showing trends toward increasing feminization, as critical populations are on the decline. Some evidence shows this is due to the concentration of chemically produced hormones in the water and soil.

Everyday, when we arise from sleep, we wash our bodies with some type of cleanser, we remove our hair from our skin on our legs with some type of shaving cream, this opens the pores and makes absorption of the moisturizer or body lotion that we then apply over 90% of our body much greater. Then we clean our faces with a facial wash, facial toner, and apply a facial moisturizer which usually contains a “UV protectant.” These are all normal parts of our daily routine but it can also be looked at as daily dosing of harmful ingredients which have a long lasting effect on fertility.

Did you know that approximately 99% of the 14,228 skin care and cosmetic products on the market have never been evaluated for safety by the FDA (US Food & Drug Administration), CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) or any other publicly accountable institution? In addition, about 74% of all personal care products on the market according to chemical industry databases contain:

Carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals)
Teratogens (causing birth defects)
Reproductive toxins (male & female infertility)
Developmental toxins (hazardous to unborn children)
Skin/sense organ toxins (causing skin disease and rashes)
Allergenic toxins (causing allergies)
Mutagens (causing cells to mutate)

Also, even more alarming is the fact that, 57% of all skin care products contain "penetration enhancer" chemicals like Propylene Glycol and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate that drive down deep through five layers of skin and cause more absorption into the bloodstream.
