Estrogen Like Chemicals
Pregnant women have beautiful skin and it is frequently called the “pregnancy glow.” This "glow" comes from the increased amount of estrogen present during pregnancy. Estrogen does a number of things. Not only does it give the skin a moist, vibrant appearance, it also indirectly acts to reduce the amount of testosterone and by doing this, it reduces things that are considered to be unattractive such as acne, and facial hair.
Many skin care products, especially the more expensive natural ones have instituted herbs and compounds which act as phytoestrogens, which are estrogen-like compounds. Even though it may be “all natural”, your body still identifies it as estrogen and it has estrogen like properties. These produce very similar effects as the natural hormones and they disrupt the natural hormone cycle of the body. Estrogen is fine in certain circumstances, such as in women who are near menopause and have low estrogen levels. These herbs can help improve some of these symptoms.

Overall, I have found it very upsetting that it has become acceptable for an entire industry to manipulate the hormone balance of our country. This is absolutely affecting the reproductive health of the United States. Fortunately, the European Union, which has worse fertility problems than the U.S., has taken steps to regulate the levels of these compounds in their products. But, nothing is being done in this country to protect our fertility.
Estrogen-like chemicals affect fertility by mimicking estrogen in the body. These compounds have the ability to bind to estrogen receptor sites and exert estrogenic activities in the body just like naturally occurring estrogen. Estrogen is the dominant hormone in females, though men do need a small amount of it as well. It is necessary for life to be certain, but when estrogen levels rise too high a host of problems follow. In women rising estrogen is related to conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, fibrocystic breasts, and cervical dysplasia, all of which are associated with increased cancer risks. Excess estrogen is stored in fat and this further complicates the issue due to the fact that it will gradually work its way out of the fat over time. It’s a self-promoting cycle that is very difficult to reverse.
Infertility rates are at an all-time high and we’re looking at both men and women. Males have had a steadily declining sperm count since the 1950’s, and prostate and testicular cancer has risen. We’re not just seeing this phenomenon in humans either. The males of many species of birds, mammals, and amphibians are showing trends toward increasing feminization, as critical populations are on the decline. Some evidence shows this is due to the concentration of our chemically produced hormones in the water and soil.
