Dr. Eva Littman, Fertility Specialist
After graduating from Duke University Medical School in 1998, I remained at Duke to complete my Obstetrics and Gynecology training. As I was finishing my training in 2002, I knew that I wanted to be a Fertility Specialist, though I wanted to experience medicine at a different university. I was accepted to the Reproductive and Endocrinology Fellowship at Stanford University, which I completed in 2005. Once I finished my fellowship, I joined another Fertility Doctor in a practice in Las Vegas. After two years, I decided to set out on my own and I opened Red Rock Fertility Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As a Fertility Specialist, I have been alarmed at the fact that now I am treating a large number of women in their twenties for severe infertility, also known as decreased ovarian reserve. Despite their young age, these women have hormone levels and egg quality of women age over 40 years old and this is becoming more common not only in the United States, but also the rest of the world.
After noticing the trend, I asked these women a number of questions to try to find a common thread that would link them together. I looked at their size, weight, ethnicity, social status... etc.. Finally, I did find an interesting commonality.....most of these women use numerous products on their skin to maintain their appearance. Not only have we had more technological advances in the cosmetic industry, but as time has gone by, there has been more emphasis on appearance. The skincare industry has made many advances in what chemicals can be used to create younger, healthier looking skin. The problem is that many of these agents have been shown in scientific studies to have a negative effect on fertility.
The question is, what is the cost of youthful appearance? Are we as a population ready to sacrifice our fertility for the appearance of youth? It is rather ironic that the younger looking women in my clinic had the “older” FSH levels. So far, there has not been a large "awareness campaign" about this. I am a fertility specialist and I only recently discovered how toxic some of the chemicals in these products we use everyday really are.
I went into medicine to help people, and now I have found a real cause. It is my purpose to increase awareness about the potentially harmful components that are used everyday in our skin products and to provide alternatives that are safe for women and men to use. I hope that this information will spread quickly and people can at least start using these ideas at an early age.
We have a defined number of eggs when we are born, and once they are gone, our options are either egg donation or adoption. Unfortunately eggs do not regenerate. As a result, advances are currently being made in egg freezing, but if we can stop the negative environmental effects on our eggs, then more advanced techniques may not be necessary.
This is why I have customized a complete line of skincare products that are made from all natural organic components that have not been shown to have a negative effect on fertility. Applying these products on a daily basis will not increase your fertility, but certainly will not contribute towards a decline in egg or sperm quality. This product line is complete with various moisturizers, facial washes, and sunscreens which will allow you to continue your daily skincare routine without the daily dosages of harmful substances that will affect fertility.
